This was such a bizarre book and totally out of my wheelhouse。 And yet I thoroughly (surprisingly) loved it。 Truly stunning。 4。5 rounded down。 I can’t quite put my finger on why I’m rounding down and not up, but something kept me from being 5 star floored。 It’s still really really great though and kept me riveted the whole time。

So, I had high expectations going into this book -- but ended up finding that for me it was pretty good but not spectacular。 The book follows Miri and her wife Leah, alternating between the present narrated by Miri and a past timeline narrated by Leah。 In the present, Miri is coming to terms with Leah's return from a scientific submarine research trip to to bottom of the ocean that was meant to be three weeks but ended up being six months。 Leah hasn't come back quite the same, she is distant, qu So, I had high expectations going into this book -- but ended up finding that for me it was pretty good but not spectacular。 The book follows Miri and her wife Leah, alternating between the present narrated by Miri and a past timeline narrated by Leah。 In the present, Miri is coming to terms with Leah's return from a scientific submarine research trip to to bottom of the ocean that was meant to be three weeks but ended up being six months。 Leah hasn't come back quite the same, she is distant, quiet, and spends her days in the bathroom running the water endlessly。 Leah's flashback chapters tell the story of what happened underwater, a story she cannot bring herself to tell Miri, when the lights went out and they were trapped in the dark at the ocean floor with no sense of time and no way to call for help。 It was hyped to be incredibly dark, haunting, creepy, and atmospheric; a literary horror novel, essentially。 That's not wrong, it genuinely was all of these things! But that description did make me expect it to be more haunting and psychologically suspenseful than it ended up being。 It was a slow moving character study, a look at grief and loss, a discussion about letting go of those who have left us。 There were some exceedingly creepy scenes, but there were also lots of flashbacks to childhood or early in their relationship, lots of watching movies and drinking coffee and trying to keep their minds off the things that are difficult to process。 I know lots of people have loved this。 I liked it, and probably would have loved it if I was a fan of slow character studies and navigating changing family relationships, and then wanted a little weird indie horror film thrown into the mix along with those other elements。 Also, only read this book if you are comfortable with unanswered questions! I'm fine with it but I know others who can't stand that。 3。5 stars 。。。more

Soft 4。 The writing style!!! Ugh。 Overall really enjoyed。 The story was very atmospheric in a way that felt similar to a gothic style and a slow descent into madness。 My only gripe was the culmination of Leah’s time under sea, which along with the ending, felt anti-climatic。

Don’t know what to rate it yet。 It’s such a bizarre book that was creepy, intense and somehow boring all at the same time。 I needed to know how it ended and I’m still left contused。

Exceptional。 This is the kind of book that I dream about reading。

I was fully prepared to give this book a healthy four stars, but the ending was so inconclusive that it knocked it down to three stars。 Great book up until the lack luster end。 Lovecraft would be into it (besides the fact he was probably homophobic)。

3。75 rounded down! This was a little too internal for me; I would’ve liked more focus on what Leah had going on in the submarine/ the obviously cult-ish “Centre”/the eeriness of the whole thing than Miri’s neuroticisms, but could tell pretty quickly that this was more literary than I’d bargained for。 Not bad, just not what I anticipated Ultimately though, this was a really interesting book and a very aching sort of sapphic romance, which I liked! 3。5 stars。 The writing was beautiful。 But this book fell victim to ‘too much hype。’ I’m glad this book was short because it waited until the end for anything to happen。

Utterly odd premise, but beautiful writing and perfectly read。

Beautiful and fantastic。 I think I will reread this one again someday。 I bought the UK version because the cover is so pretty and depicts the story so well。 Don’t know why the American version of the cover is boring! Haha。 This book is a slow burn of a read that is both intimate and captivating。 Also the oceanography of the book, very well done。 Bravo!

Again, I managed to read a book where I have a lot of mixed feelings about。 I loved it and at the same time I formed an intense dislike for it。 I am in awe of the plotting, but I hate-loved the atmospheric choice of the writing。 I want to praise the writing to high heavens, but at the same time cannot urge myself to do it, because I did not enjoy reading this book。 I absolutely loved the way it started and dove into the story with gusto and at the same time am ashamed to admit that I had a hard Again, I managed to read a book where I have a lot of mixed feelings about。 I loved it and at the same time I formed an intense dislike for it。 I am in awe of the plotting, but I hate-loved the atmospheric choice of the writing。 I want to praise the writing to high heavens, but at the same time cannot urge myself to do it, because I did not enjoy reading this book。 I absolutely loved the way it started and dove into the story with gusto and at the same time am ashamed to admit that I had a hard time finishing this book, because I was bored out of my mind。"The deep sea is a haunted house: a place in which things that ought not to exist move about in the darkness。 Unstill, is the word Leah uses, tilting her head to the side as if in answer to some sound, though the evening is quiet - dry hum of the road outside the window and little to draw the ear besides。"These first sentences left a resonance with me。 The deep sea is a dark place that has not been explored much before。 There is something scary about it, but also something really intriguing。 There is some kind of expectant calmness - something is going to happen, but you are not worried about it (yet)。The beginning felt like being wrapped in a comforter while sitting in your dark room in the depths of the night; calm and warm。 So I totally expected to like the story。 And objectively speaking this story is amazing, the writing style and the build up were carefully constructed to fit the plot。 However, I just couldn't get into it。 There was some kind of divide - some kind of distance。As far as I can tell this atmosphere was a deliberate choice of the writer, because it fit the story so well, but I just did not like it。This story illustrated the aftermath of a catastrophic deep sea expedition (a submersible with its occupants disappeared for six months) and how the wive of one of the explorers has to live with the consequences - and she is not coping well with it。 It seems like she views everything through a fog。 She cannot really fathom what happened down there in the abyss。The writing switches between Miri's (the wive's) memories of Leah (the explorer) before and after the expedition, as well as Leah's recollections of the expedition。 The very calm and (let's say) superficial writing style reflects the divide between the normalcy of their life before and the seeming normalcy after - until something jarring happens to illustrate the aftermath。One moment Miri is drinking tea in her apartment, contemplating life and in the next moment she sees skin sluicing of Leah's body like water (it made for an absolutely horrifying picture)。However, there was still a distance between me as a reader and the two protagonists, which just created a divide between me and the whole story in general。 Add to it that Miri would remember a lot of seemingly irrelevant memories of their past。 In retrospect, it was to build up the atmosphere and illustrate the normalcy of their lives before。 But at the time I was reading, I was just bored out of my mind and would inadvertently skip over these parts and then later have to go back to re-read, because I couldn't remember what the chapter was about。Then again, my feeling of indifference also fit quite well with the incomprehension at this objectively horrifying situation that Miri was feeling - the brain just couldn't deal with it yet, so it just turned off (my brain just turned off, because of the boredom)。 Another point I have to talk about is the plotting, because it was done marvelously。 The story is written in five parts, each one named after the zones of deepness of the sea (from the sunlight zone to the hadal zone) and intertwined with the different stages of grief and trauma。In the sunlight zone, everything still seems normal: Leah seems distant, but she is talking to Miri。 Miri is trying to get her wive help while at the same time trying to keep up appearances of a normal life。 Then with each part of the story - with the slow descent to the bottom of the sea - their relationships starts to unravel, Leah gets worse and worse - at times seeming more like a creature of the sea rather than a human。 People start to notice that they haven't seen Miri in a while (how is she doing?)。 Miri gets more and more desperate, constantly calling the centre that headed the expedition (what happend down there?)。Then the story reaches the hadal zone and Miri begins to understand that when Leah first disappeared on that catastrophical mission their relationship has already died; even though Leah was there with her afterwards in their shared apartment, there was a certain kind of loneliness dogging her own days。 She had finished grieving what they had "before" and now it was time to let it go and live with the "after"。 Or to say it in the words of Julia Armfield "Problem is […] that ultimately you're really the one who has to kill them。 Or not them but the idea of them - you have to make a choice to let it end。"Really, really beautiful plotting。 Absolutely magnificent piece of writing。 Still really difficult to read through, though。 I get the feeling that I will think about this book for some time yet and will probably get the urge to read it again just so I can appreciate the wonderful plotting over and over again。 。。。more

Very odd, yet breathtaking book and extremely well written。

Horror is not a genre I generally read since I often find myself too disturbed and, then, unable to sleep。 This one, however, I can recommend even to non horror readers。 Love, deeply immoral human experiments, situations no one should have to endure。

Liza!

depressing and gay! Heavy handed metaphor but very eerie writing kind of cancelled each other out。 Dissolution of a relationship with some body horror/sci-fi mystery elements that should have been fleshed out more。 Left me feeling weird empty and sad for a few hours!

incredibly mundane in an unsettling way。 couldn’t put it down。 at no point did I know what was coming next。 an incredibly example of love and grief。

There is a sentence in this book, “time passed, I’m not sure how much of it, and for a long time nothing happened” that actually sums up this book。 I love a slow burn but this was full of filler。 The concept was amazing, it picked up about 50% in but the ending was so flat。

The plot of this book is terrible。 You never really find out what happened to make Leah into the creature she became and no reasoning on what happened to the ship to make it stay down f0r six months and then suddenly recover。 Terrible ending!
